The Hindu Gotra System – Male Lineage Identification

The Gotra is a system which associates a person with his most ancient or root ancestor in an unbroken male lineage. For instance if a person says that he belongs to the Bharadwaja Gotra then it means that he traces back his male ancestry to the ancient Rishi (Saint or Seer) Bharadwaja. So Gotra refers to the Root Person in a person’s male lineage.

Puthandu / Tamil New Year / Tamil Varuda Pirapu


 Puthandu (Tamil: புத்தாண்டு), or better known as Tamil New Year, is the celebration of the first day of the Tamil new year in mid-April by Tamils in Tamil Nadu, in the Union_Territory of Puducherry in India, in Sri Lanka and by the Tamil population in Malaysia, Singapore, Reunion Island, Mauritius and elsewhere. People in the world greet each other on this day by saying Iniya Tamizh Puthaandu Nalvaazhthukkal (இனிய தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு நல்வாழ்த்துக்கள்). The festive occasion is in keeping with the Hindu lunar calendar.  This year it is celebrated on April 14th.

Sri Rama Navami

This year Sri Rama Navami is being celebrated on April 12.  Every Indian of whichever religious faith, is aware that among the two great Epics or Itihasas, the Ramayana takes the pride of place when compared with the Mahabharata.  Epic or Kavya, it is attributed to the Adi Kavi, Valmiki and there are very many regional recensions to it.
