The Hindu Gotra System – Male Lineage Identification

The Gotra is a system which associates a person with his most ancient or root ancestor in an unbroken male lineage. For instance if a person says that he belongs to the Bharadwaja Gotra then it means that he traces back his male ancestry to the ancient Rishi (Saint or Seer) Bharadwaja. So Gotra refers to the Root Person in a person’s male lineage.

Puthandu / Tamil New Year / Tamil Varuda Pirapu

 Puthandu (Tamil: புத்தாண்டு), or better known as Tamil New Year, is the celebration of the first day of the Tamil new year in mid-April by Tamils in Tamil Nadu, in the Union_Territory of Puducherry in India, in Sri Lanka and by the Tamil population in Malaysia, Singapore, Reunion Island, Mauritius and elsewhere. People in the world greet each other on this day by saying Iniya Tamizh Puthaandu Nalvaazhthukkal (இனிய தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு நல்வாழ்த்துக்கள்). The festive occasion is in keeping with the Hindu lunar calendar.  This year it is celebrated on April 14th.

Sri Rama Navami

This year Sri Rama Navami is being celebrated on April 12.  Every Indian of whichever religious faith, is aware that among the two great Epics or Itihasas, the Ramayana takes the pride of place when compared with the Mahabharata.  Epic or Kavya, it is attributed to the Adi Kavi, Valmiki and there are very many regional recensions to it.  

Karadaiyan Nombu

Karadaiyan Nombu is a festival celebrated by South Indian married women in Tamil Nadu.  Karadaiyan Nonbu (pronounced 'Car-a-dye-on Nomboo') is a festival of special significance to married women all over Southern India including states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.(But i think its a different name, but the same ritual).

Maha Shivratri - a Festival of awakening, devotion and meditation

Shiva is the God of Meditation and destruction. Meditation, also brings about destruction of that, which is unnecessary. The negativity that attacks our consciousness have to be destroyed, so that the new, the bliss, the awakening within, Shiva tatva replaces those negative tendencies. It can be said, the destruction of destructive forces.

Thai Pongal / Pongal Pandigai

Pongal is a harvest festival - the Tamil equivalent of Thanksgiving. It is held to honor the Sun, for a bountiful harvest. Families gather to rejoice and share their joy and their harvests with others. The Sun is offered a "Pongal" of rice and milk.

Bhogi/Bogi Pandigai

Bhogi/Bogi  festival is celebrated to rid the society of the bad and the evil. The first day, Bhogi, is celebrated on the last day of the month of Margazhi.

Scholars have often compared Bhogi to the Indra Vizha celebrated by the Chola kings at Kaveripattinam, also known as Poompuhar.

Indra Vizha was celebrated in honour of Lord Indra, also called Bhogi, the God of thunder and rain.

Vaikunta Ekadasi

Vaikunta Ekadasi is an important Hindu festival celebrated by Vaishnavites (Hindus) in India (especially in Tamil Nadu). The festival is celebrated with great significance in almost all Lord Vishnu temples in South India. This year Vaikunta Ekadasi falls on December 17th, 2010.

Tiruppavai / Andal / Margazhi Masam

'Tiruppavai' composed by Andal is a very beautiful collection of poems which women and unmarried girls read /sing during the Margazhi masam.  Andal prays to Lord Krishna in a variety of ways and calls her fellow devotees to worship.  Margazhi masam falls on 16th december 2010.

Karthigai Deepam

Karthigai Deepam is the popular festival of southern part of India and is the oldest festival with splendid and elaborated celebrations all over the state of Tamil Nadu. The festival is also termed as “Festival of Lights” and is also considered the extension of Deepavali Festival.

Vishnu Deepam is a festival observed on Pournami day in Karthigai masam per the traditional Tamil panchangam. Vishnu Deepam 2010 date is November 22. This day is a big auspicious occasion for Vaishnava sect of devotees. Vishnu Deepam is also observed as Karthigai Deepam for Vaishnavites.  And for saivites it is observed on November 21.

Tulsi Vivah/ Tulsi Kalyanam

Tulsi Vivah is an important ritual performed in Kartik month in traditional Hindu calendar. Tulsi Vivah festival is the wedding of Tulsi plant to Lord Vishnu. Tulsi Vivah is performed by some communities on the Ekadasi day after Amavasi (new moon) in Kartik month and by some communities on the Dev Diwali day or the full moon day in Kartik Month.

Govardhana Pooja

Govardhana Puja, Go-Puja and Annakuta are all connected with the story of Lord Krishna’s lifting of Govardhana Hill to protect the inhabitants of Vrindavan.

Deepavali / Diwali

Deepavali/Diwali

A colorful festival that is celebrated by all Hindus worldwide is Deepavali, which is also known as the festival of lights. This festival usually falls around late October and November. This year it falls on Nov 7th.  One important practice that the Hindus follow during the festival is to light oil lamps in their homes on Deepavali morning. By lighting the oil lamps, the Hindus are thanking the gods for the happiness, knowledge, peace and wealth that they have received. The Hindus consider Deepavali as one of the most important festivals to celebrate.

Naraka Chaturdashi/ Narak chaturdashi

Naraka Chaturdashi is a Hindu festival, which falls on the second day of the festival of Diwali.  It is celebrated one day prior to Deewali (Kartik: Amaveseye. On this night Hanuman, the son of Anjana, the divine son of the god of air (Pavan) was born. So it is also observed as Hanuman Jayanti. This festival is observed since the day lord Krishna killed the demon Narkasur.

Dhan Trayodhashi / Dhanteras

Dhanteras or Dhanatrayodashi falls on the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Kartik (October-November), i.e. two days before Diwali. The word "Dhan" means wealth. New Dhan or some form of precious metal is bought as a sign of good luck. " Dhanteras is essentially Diwali eve. The celebration of Dhanteras is prevalent in east Bihar and northern India.

Navarathiri/ Navratri/Dussera/ Golu

Navarathiri or Dussera or Golu is one of the most important festival in India and is celebrated all over india by various name ( yet will sound almost similar).

Puratassi Masam

Puratassi Fasting, or Puratasi Vratam, is observed in the Tamil month of Puratasi (September – October). In 2010, Puratassi month begins on September 17 and ends on October 17.

Bishwakarma / Vishwakarma Poojai

Bishwakarma Puja is the main celebration for the workers and employers. Persons who works in the field of Architect And Engineering celebrate this festival with lot of joy.  It falls on September 17th of this year.
